CIPS Societies

The Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies (CIPS) is an organization of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic societies, founded in 1992 to represent the interests of psychoanalysts belonging to independent societies of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) in the United States.

CIPS constituent societies include the Psychoanalytic Center of California (Los Angeles), the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (Los Angeles), Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society (Seattle), the San Francisco Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies (San Francisco), and the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (New York). In addition, CIPS hosts a Direct Member Society, composed of individual IPA members, within its organizational structure.

Los Angeles Institute And Society For Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS)
The Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies, (LAISPS) was the first interdisciplinary psychoanalytic institute established in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1970 by nationally recognized psychologists, social workers and educators, and in 1993, became a full component society of the International Psychoanalytical Association.

San Fransisco Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies (SFIPS)
The Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies (IPS) and the Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Studies (IPPS) are postgraduate training institutions with complementary educational goals. Since 1986, they have provided parallel and mutually enhancing training tracks for Bay Area clinicians interested in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society (NPS)
NPS is a growing Psychoanalytic Society in Seattle, founded in 2001 and at this time a Provisional Society of the I.P.A. Our psychoanalytic view follows that of the Contemporary British Object Relations which builds on the contributions of Klein, Bion, Rosenfeld, Segal and Joseph to mention a few.

Psychoanalytic Center of California (PCC)
The Psychoanalytic Center of California (PCC) was registered as a Non-profit Organization in 1984 and founded a training Institute in 1987. PCC was accepted as a Component Member of the International Psycho-Analytical Association in 1991.

Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR)
The Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR) was founded in 1958 as a membership society for non-medical analysts sharing an interest in Freud's theory and technique. It provided a congenial setting for the exchange of ideas and the discussion of cases and theory.

The Direct Member Society (DMS)
The Direct Member Society (DMS) is an autonomous professional society, established and hosted by CIPS. The DMS is the organizational "home" of direct members within CIPS. Direct membership in CIPS is open to all members of the IPA not otherwise affiliated with CIPS through membership in a CIPS component society.
