Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS)The Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies, (LAISPS) was the first interdisciplinary psychoanalytic institute established in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1970 by nationally recognized psychologists, social workers and educators, and in 1993, became a full component society of the International Psychoanalytical Association. LAISPS' unique orientation is an openness to the rich diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice. It is incorporated in the State of California as a non-profit scientific and educational organization, and its mission is to provide psychoanalytic education in a systematic and comprehensive manner. The Society offers a forum for intellectual and educational stimulation for its members and for local mental health professionals through scientific programs, workshops and extension Courses. In addition, LAISPS offers a two year Certificate Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy to qualified professionals. The Institute provides in depth training in the theory, technique, practice and research of psychoanalysis in a spirit of open-minded scientific inquiry with an emphasis on the humanistic concerns advocated by the original founders of psychoanalysis. Rather than advocating a specific theoretical viewpoint, the Institute respects the candidate's growing knowledge and autonomy through exposure to the broad diversity of psychoanalytic thought. This includes classical psychoanalysis, ego psychology, object relations, neo-Freudian, self psychology, intersubjectivity and relational theory. Educated in each perspective and its clinical application, the candidate is supported in developing his or her unique psychoanalytic identity. LAISPS also provides the opportunity to earn a Ph.D. in psychoanalysis. The training is designed to accomodate the working professional and to produce a well-rounded psychoanalyst who may practice, teach, conduct research and apply psychoanalytic understanding to the broad spectrum of human endeavor. Upon graduating as a certified psychoanalyst, candidates are eligible to receive a PsyD. degree in Psychoanalysis. The Institute is open to licensed professionals of varied backgrounds, and to clinical and research contributions from all mental health and allied disciplines, LAISPS does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, or religious affiliation.
