Letters of Reference — Guidelines
- The Certification application requires two letters of reference from colleagues.
- The Recertification application requires two letters of reference from colleagues and one letter from the Society/Institute President. The Society/Institute President’s letter must address your good standing in the Society/Institute and your active participation in its functioning.
To the Applicant:
Please ask two experienced psychoanalysts who know your work to complete these letters of reference. These may be colleagues, supervisors, or consultants and may be from any IPA institute, which currently includes APsA as well. However, each individual submitting a letter of reference on your behalf must have five years of postgraduate psychoanalytic experience, be certified in psychoanalysis or be eligible for board certification. You may meet with one or both colleagues to discuss your work and the letters of reference.
Copy and send the link below to your references so they can upload their letters directly using the Letters of Reference Submission Form, located at the bottom of this page.
To the Analyst providing a reference:
A colleague has requested that you provide a letter of reference in support of his or her application for The CIPS Board Certification in Psychoanalysis. Letters of reference include a short questionnaire of 27 items as well as space for additional comments about the applicant and his or her work. When you have completed the letter of reference, please upload the completed letter using the Letters of Reference Submission Form, located at the bottom of this page.
To the Society/Institute President:
A member of your Society/Institute has applied for certification through the CIPS Board of Certification Process. In order to complete their application, we need a letter from you attesting to his or her status as an active member of your society/institute who is currently in good standing with no record of ethical violations. When you have completed the letter of reference, please upload the completed letter using the Letters of Reference Submission Form, located at the bottom of this page.
Important:
CIPS does not accept paper submissions or emailed letters. All reference letters must be submitted exclusively through the Letters of Reference Submission Form, located at the bottom of this page. Letters submitted through this form are securely stored in our database and received directly by the CIPS Administrator.
