CIPS NewsBriefs - Fall 2023

Letter from the Editor

Dear CIPS Community,

This issue of NewsBriefs seeks to do just that—to succinctly share the news in our shared communities, and also to be brief. I assume that we are all very busy, each in our own ways. I do hope that you’ll take about ten to fifteen minutes to read through what is here—including the many accomplishments, heartfelt commitments, and reflections of your colleagues.

This issue’s theme is “Growth and Disruption,” and I want to alert you to a couple creative reflections that were generously shared with us. Carolyn Steinberg, MD, FIPA has shared a painting, which also includes a thought-provoking reflection on her piece.

Rikki Ricard, MFA, MA, FIPA has shared a written reflection aptly titled “Growth and Disruption”. The essay reflects on many dialectics, including a challenging, and ultimately transformative process that occurred at NPSI this past year. I strongly recommend taking at least a few minutes to experience these artistic expressions!

Gloria Demby, LCSW—the new president of CIPS—has shared with us a poignant reflection on this moment in time. I encourage you to read and reflect on what she has generously shared with us, and to allow your own thoughts to dream into future possibilities.

I want to once again thank the very talented and committed Mafe Izaguirre, our designer, who deserves the credit for the beauty you see in these pages. And thank you to all the of the reporters, who do much of the labor behind the scenes. I also want to welcome our new IPTAR reporter, Anthony Graves!

The theme “Growth and Disruption” came to me in a dreamy state. As I looked around and thought about this moment in time, I saw that tension in so many places—from the intimate encounters of psychoanalysis to the geopolitics of war and peace. Amidst all this change, and all the feelings it evokes, my hope is that we can keep listening… keep thinking… keep turning towards each other, as we navigate such uncertainty.

Thank you for your valuable time,
