Letters of Reference — Guidelines

This page provides instructions for Certification and Recertification references (at the top) and the submission form (at the bottom). Select your role below to view the information and steps that apply to you.

Certification requires two (2) letters of reference from colleagues.
Recertification requires two (2) letters of reference from colleagues AND one (1) additional letter from your Society or Institute President addressing your good standing and active participation in the organization’s activities and functioning.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

1. Choose two colleagues

Select two experienced psychoanalysts who know your work — colleagues, supervisors, or consultants from any IPA institute, including APsA. Each must have at least five years of postgraduate psychoanalytic experience and hold or be eligible for board certification.

2. Send them this page link

Copy the link below and send it to each reference. They will find the submission form at the bottom of this page. You do not need to submit anything on their behalf.

3. You may meet with your references

You are welcome to meet with one or both colleagues to discuss your work and the letter prior to submission.

What exactly do I have to submit? A colleague has asked you to provide a reference for their CIPS Board Certification or Recertification application. Please complete the questionnaire and prepare a separate letter of recommendation. Both documents must be submitted as Microsoft Word files (.doc or .docx) using the form at the bottom of this page. Follow the steps below to complete the required documents.
